Moving...Just a hop, skip, and a jump away

As of a week ago, our time in the little unfurnished place we were renting was quickly running out. We had begun the delightful process of tracking down somewhere to live for the next few months when we ran into Pete, the olive guy again. He had a thought and said he may have a place for us to live. Let me just say that this guy is a Godsend. He has taken us under his wing and helped us out at every turn. Don't ask me why, he must like us. But as it turned out, his mother-in-law Jeanette was at that very moment tossing around the idea of taking on some people to rent a room in her home. She was a little uneasy about not knowing the renters (but she had gotten to visit a bit with us at the 4th of July BBQ) and she had to run it by her landlord, so we waited a few days for the verdict. On the weekend we went over to have a quick tour and talk things over with her. We all parted that evening very happy with ourselves and Mike and I went to our place to pack all of our possessions into the car for the long trip...across the road. We can't actually see the old place from Jeanette's but it's just at the bottom of the hill along the road we drive to work each day. This house is infinitely more pleasant and homey and it has a fantastic view of the bay and the sunrise (yes, we are unfortunately awake to enjoy each them nearly every morning).

The house is quite good size since once upon a time the owners thought to make it into a Bed and Breakfast and so we have our own room with ensuite bathroom. This made us feel better about moving in on this poor unexpecting lady! Her home is cozy and colorful and we have all the comforts of home such as chairs. All of you at home don't realize the difference a few chairs and a couch will make, oh and a table. Immediately we began feeling like social intelligent human beings again. Jeanette is a doll and the three of us have enjoyed cooking and eating and cooking together. Doesn't everything revolve around food? Nah, we watch the occasional TV movie (she sadly doesn't have a VCR or DVD player for videos) and play games as well. She only very narrowly beat me at Upwords the other night, but I was just being nice... Over all, it's been great.

After moving in to the house Saturday, we headed south about an hour to the Nelson Lakes area to see what we could see. We headed to the info center on Lake Rotoiti and then walked just a short way around the lake, on the sunny side, cuz it was COOOLD. We have lots of information on trails and hikes and huts to sleep in though so we plan to head back there sometime in the spring for a backpacking trip. Fun stuff!

Friday was Mike's 25th birthday! Happy birthday Mikey!!! We had to work but I baked cupcakes and took them to share with our co-workers reminiscent of grade school. The cupcakes were well recieved and we were all in such a festive mood we all bailed early and went home at 2:30. It WAS raining for a wee bit, and no one seemed to care that by the time we left it had stopped. We headed into Richmond to call family in Boise for a quick birthday song and chat and to get a recipe from the Klein archives. We then ran to the grocery store and then home to cook. I have to admit to my chagrin that Mike had to help cook his birthday dinner, but then he made me hike in sheep poo two days in a row so we are even. We cooked dinner and Jeanette joined us for the Klein dish of leg of lamb, doctored rice Beard style, broccoli, Italian Ciabatta bread with butter, and for dessert a carrot cake a la Motueka's New World grocery store. Sounds more eclectic than it was and mmmmmm was it tasty. We even had candles!

The rest of the weekend was spent relaxing and recharging our batteries. We didn't really plan it that way, but I guess that nearly three months of working and playing hard caught up with us and all we felt like doing was reading in the sunshine and wandering on the beach. *sigh* I know it's rough. =+)
